Can first aid training be conducted at our workplace?
Yes, workplace training can be arranged to accommodate your organisation's location, operational requirements and team size, subject to availability and course requirements. On-site training allows employees to develop practical skills while minimising unnecessary travel and disruption to business operations. How long is a first aid certificate valid in South Africa?
RITE's published First Aid Level 1 and Primary Care First Aid courses specify a certificate validity period of three years. Employers should monitor certificate expiry dates and arrange refresher or renewal training to maintain workplace first aid competency. Keeping training records up to date also supports your organisation's health and safety administration.
Which first aid training course does my workplace need?
The right course depends on your workplace risks, employee responsibilities and the level of first aid competency required. RITE offers Basic First Aid (Unit Standard 119567) and Risk-Based Primary Care First Aid (Unit Standard 120496). Primary Care builds on basic first aid competencies and requires prior competency in Unit Standard 119567. Contact us to help identify the appropriate training for your organisation.
How do I choose an accredited first aid training provider in South Africa?
Choose a provider with verifiable accreditation, appropriately qualified facilitators and recognised assessment and certification processes. Look for practical, hands-on training that prepares employees to respond to real workplace emergencies. RITE offers accredited workplace safety training supported by its QCTO and FP&M SETA credentials, Department of Employment and Labour recognition and SAIOSH affiliation.
How many qualified first aiders does my company need?
The legal requirement is at least one qualified first aider per 50 employees in general workplaces, or per 100 employees in shops and offices. This applies where more than 10 employees are employed at a workplace. Businesses should also consider shift patterns, employee leave and operational risks to ensure adequate first aid coverage at all times.
Is first aid training compulsory for businesses in South Africa?
Yes. South Africa's Occupational Health and Safety Act and General Safety Regulations require employers to ensure prompt first aid is available in the workplace. Where more than 10 employees work at a site, at least one qualified first aider must be readily available for every 50 employees, or every 100 employees in shops and offices. Employers must also provide accessible first aid boxes where more than five employees are employed.
